Honoring the Sarles

The couple's journey began at Hamline University, where they both earned degrees in nursing and married during their senior year. Don's career included service with the Minnesota National Guard, which took them to various locations, including Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Spike pursued a nursing career, teaching obstetrical nursing at Ancker Hospital's School of Nursing in St. Paul before dedicating herself to raising their three children. Their family eventually grew to include four granddaughters, their pride and joy.
In 2012, when the "Let's Go Fishing" program—a nonprofit offering fishing and boating outings to seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities—sought support in Eden Prairie, Don and Spike immediately offered their dock on Riley Lake to house the program's pontoon boat. Their generosity provided a home for the boat for two years until a permanent dock was established. With Don and Spike’s encouragement, our club gave generously to the program and in 2019, helped fund the purchase of two new pontoon boats for the program.
Following Don's passing, the Eden Prairie Noon Rotary Club honored his contributions by installing a memorial plaque at the "Let's Go Fishing" dock on Riley Lake. This tribute stands as a testament to Don's dedication to service and his positive influence on the community.
Spike continued to be active in the community, engaging with her church, Rotary, and various organizations. She was known for her vibrant spirit, quick wit, and passion for bringing people together through organizing events or participating in community activities. Her passing on February 8, 2024, was a significant loss to the community and to the club. In remembrance, her family requested that charitable donations be made to the Eden Prairie Rotary Foundation and other charitable organizations.
The Sarles' legacy of generosity, service, and community involvement continues to inspire members of the Eden Prairie Noon Rotary Club and the broader community. Their lives serve as a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals can have on enriching the lives of others.
